Do not trade rain for a worse location
Keep a grill in the outdoor location allowed for its model. Garages, tents, unsuitable carports and makeshift canopies are not automatically safe rain shelters. Charcoal and gas introduce dangerous combustion gases as well as fire risks. An open garage door does not turn the interior into an approved outdoor cooking site.
Never move a hot grill to escape a shower. Check conditions beforehand and decide while the equipment is cold whether they match its instructions. Strong wind, lightning or a slippery base may require canceling the cook. Guests can still eat under safe shelter while the grilling is abandoned; the two decisions do not need to depend on each other.
Respect electrical moisture limits
Electric grills, ignition systems, rotisserie motors and measuring devices have their own moisture restrictions. Equipment intended for outdoor use is not automatically suitable for any rainfall or wet plug connection. Do not improvise plastic-bag covers over hot or electrical components, and do not patch damaged cables in order to continue cooking.
If the instructions exclude rain operation or the permitted conditions cannot be met, leave the appliance off. For equipment already operating, follow the manufacturer's safe shutdown directions. Avoid thoughtlessly touching wet electrical parts and seek qualified help for a fault. The objective is recognizing permitted safe operation, not finding a workaround for every weather condition.
Choose a menu with a real backup
When the forecast is uncertain, select dishes that can be cooked fully in an oven or pan. Have suitable cookware and a realistic schedule ready. Keep raw ingredients refrigerated while deciding. Food already partly cooked on the grill needs an uninterrupted safe completion process, not a long pause on the outdoor table while you reorganize the evening.
Wet gloves may offer poorer protection, and slippery utensils make handling harder. Keep the work area dry where that is genuinely possible at an approved location; otherwise postpone the grilling. A changed dinner plan is preferable to damaged equipment or an injury. Prepared sides and a shared meal can still succeed without needing to keep the outdoor cooker running.
Use grilling equipment only in its intended location and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Timing is not a substitute for checking doneness.
